Essential Job Functions

The Research Services Manager is responsible for the overall management and administration of the San Francisco Research Services department. This position manages the San Francisco Research Services staff, provides non-legal research services to the attorneys and staff and manages the department’s collections. This position exercises a moderate to high degree of discretion and independent judgment.

Essential Job Functions:

Essential job functions include those set forth below. Some of these functions will be handled directly and others may be delegated and supervised. Other duties may be assigned.

Research Services

  • Manages all aspects of Research Services for the San Francisco office, including the assignment of research requests to Research Staff in the San Francisco. office and throughout the Firm, as appropriate.  Ensures coverage, response times and quality service to all patrons, including urgent after-hours requests.
  • As part of the firm-wide Research Services team, collaborates with Research Staff in all offices in managing research projects and ensuring high quality, timely and accurate results.
  • Provides non-legal research services to attorneys and staff, including ready reference and in-depth research in a wide variety of topical areas including, but not limited to corporate transactional, litigation and fact-based, intellectual property and news/media research.
  • Uses critical thinking to analyze each request and identify the best research resources for efficient and cost-effective resolution.
  • Presents research results in a clear and logical manner, including analysis of the results and suggestions for further research.
  • Provides business development research support including background research and competitive intelligence on current or potential clients and markets.
  • Provides current awareness services on specific topics as requested by attorneys and staff.
  • Obtains documents and books from outside sources including document retrieval services, agencies, courts and other libraries.
  • Participates in the evaluation of new and existing electronic resources with an eye toward improved service and research efficiencies.
  • Collaborates with other Research Services Managers and Research Staff on projects and research, as appropriate.

Staff Management

  • Participates in the hiring, training and supervising of San Francisco Research Staff.
  • Leads by example, establishes clear expectations, sets direction and priorities.
  • Regularly reviews research work product and provides timely feedback.

Marketing and Training

  • Actively markets and promotes Research Services to the attorneys and staff.
  • Conducts Research Services orientation and coordinates database training for new attorney hires and other legal staff.
  • Ensures new hires are provided with the necessary resources and tools for their specific practice area.
  • Coordinates ongoing research training and education for attorneys and staff.
  • Assists in developing and maintaining content for the Research Services intranet and other knowledge sharing platforms.

Library Operations

  • Manages and coordinates all aspects of Library operations.
  • Handles collection development, including new acquisitions, subscription renewals, updating and weeding of collection.
  • Seeks opportunities to improve department efficiency and reduce expenses.
  • Reviews, tracks and approves all library invoices for payment.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education:  A Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science.
     
  • Experience:  A minimum of three years of law firm library experience is required. Expertise in legal/business/intellectual property research techniques is preferred.
     
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Demonstrated research skills and knowledge of legal and business databases as well as other legal and non-legal research sources.
    • Ability to prioritize requests, meet deadlines, delegate work and manage a diverse workload with a strong focus on providing superior library and research services in a fast-paced environment.
    • Dedicated to providing consistently superior customer service.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work with individuals at all organizational levels.
    • Outstanding analytical, troubleshooting, organizational, time management and planning skills.
    • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of the larger firm-wide Research Services team.
    • Ability to remain current and adapt to changes in resources and research techniques, and shifts in information demands
    • Flexibility to work early evenings and additional hours as necessary to meet operating and business needs.
    • Ability to use discretion and exercise independent and sound judgment
