Essential Job Functions

Kirkland & Ellis LLP is seeking a dynamic and motivated individual for the role of Business Intake Counsel in the Business Intake & Conflicts Department. This is an exciting opportunity to assist attorneys with their compliance duties in a fast-paced environment while contributing to the success of the Firm. This position offers the opportunity to assist in processing requests to ensure they meet Firm policies and business requirements. The role is critical to identifying potential risk, communicating potential resolution, and securing the necessary approvals as part of the new business process and ongoing obligations to Firm clients. The ideal individual will have a collaborative mindset, an acute attention to detail, strong written and communication skills, work well under pressure, and understand the meaning of exceptional customer service. This position will require critical thinking, strong judgment and decision-making skills to be able to identify the potential issues with bringing on new business to the Firm. Training will be provided. 
 

The Business Intake Counsel has these core responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of the Business Intake Supervisor and Risk Management leadership, the Counsel works closely with attorneys, the Office of General Counsel and members of the Business Intake & Conflicts Department around the globe to process requests associated with accepting and indexing client engagement documentation and identifying and processing requests to ensure client and Firm data is kept confidential.
  • Subject matter expert on outside counsel guidelines and retention letters utilizing IntApp’s Terms application.
  • An understanding of conflict of interest concepts, Firm business rules, relational databases and grammar rules is required.
     

Essential Job Functions

  • Review outside counsel guidelines utilizing IntApp’s Terms application.  Advise firm attorneys and staff on the firm’s ability to comply with such agreements and recommend modifications as needed. 
  • Respond to inquiries from the Office of the General Counsel, Risk Management leadership and attorneys with accurate information in a timely and professional manner.
  • Assist with communicating Firm policies and procedures relating to engagement documentation and make recommendations for changes when appropriate.
  • Develop a broad subject matter expertise regarding outside counsel guidelines provisions and the firm’s policies regarding such provisions.
  • Oversee collection of required engagement and waiver documentation. 
  • Draft and negotiate retention letters and specific waivers as requested.
  • Constantly review, assess, recommend, and implement process, procedure, and technology improvements to ensure optimum customer service and efficiency; work with Business Intake & Conflicts management to evolve and grow area.
  • Provide expert service and counsel to designated attorneys.
  • Work with Business Intake and Conflicts teams to address time sensitive issues and ad hoc engagement documentation related questions.
  • Assist department leadership as needed.
  • Keep up-to-date with current events that may impact different practice areas within the Firm.
  • Have substantive knowledge of Rules of Professional Conduct and current state of legal ethics issues.
  • Recognize when additional hours are needed to meet department goals. Work after hours in evening and on weekends as needed.
  • Be available for urgent and confidential situations, including evenings and weekends. Be available 24/7 via mobile device.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Law degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active bar license in a state where Kirkland & Ellis has an office or in your state of residence.
  • 4+ years of law firm experience, specifically in Outside Counsel Guidelines, risk management and corporate compliance.
  • Experience in conflicts identification and clearance at a large law firm.
