Essential Job Functions


As a member of the Firmwide (FW) Legal Recruiting and Development Department (LRD), the Washington, D.C. Senior Legal Recruiting Coordinator will work with all aspects of attorney recruiting programs in DC, including lateral, clerk, law student, and entry level hiring.

This position requires a high level of collaboration with attorneys and staff and the ability to work independently and exercise independent judgment.

The ideal candidate will possess excellent oral and written communication skills; be a team player; demonstrate strong client service; have the utmost respect for confidentiality and attention to detail; work independently and be able to follow up with minimal instructions; have the ability to prioritize work and work on multiple projects in a fast paced environment; interact with potential recruits, attorneys and staff at all levels of the Firm’s business; have strong organizational skills, demonstrate initiative and work under pressure and deal with demanding deadlines.  Individual must be flexible with work allocation and have the ability to work overtime.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (This list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented and changed as necessary.)

Lateral Hiring:

  • Work closely with local Legal Recruiting team and senior partners within all practice areas regarding lateral needs
  • Act as a contact for judicial clerks, lateral candidates and headhunters
  • Source candidates and review candidate materials
  • Schedule interviews and greet candidates
  • Collect & distribute interview feedback
  • Accurately track all candidates
  • Update Kirkland’s website with open position information
  • Coordinate judicial clerk outreach and receptions
  • Manage pipeline of transfer attorneys to/from other Kirkland offices
  • Prepare new-hire paperwork
  • Coordinate new-hire orientation and onboarding
  • Focus on lateral attorney integration
  • Provide reports and statistical data as needed

School Outreach

  • Assist with law school and law student outreach including panels, receptions, mentoring programs, etc.
  • Assist with sponsorship requests
  • Process local law school, diversity and pro bono related sponsorships as necessary

Fall Recruiting:

  • Schedule callback interviews
  • Coordinate rising 2L receptions
  • Manage resume collection
  • Prepare on-campus materials for interviewers
  • Prepare for callback meetings and offer decision packets
  • Track candidate follow-up
  • Coordinate offer dinners, pre-OCI receptions
  • Maintain ViDesktop records with support of LRD team
  • Process Symplicity employer feedback forms
  • Assist with candidate and law firm shared expenses
  • Assist with the organization of annual on and off campus recruiting events, including on-site support as a representative of the Kirkland & Ellis Recruitment team.

Summer Associate Program:

  • Coordinate Summer Associate orientation
  • Manage summer associate work allocation
  • Plan, coordinate and attend events
  • Track Summer Program budget
  • Coordinate mid and end of summer reviews
  • Liaise between the Summer Associates and the attorneys and staff
  • Support the Washington, D.C. summer associate training program

New Associate Onboarding/Orientation:

  • Coordinate multi-day orientation agenda
  • Manage all speakers and related presentations
  • Plan orientation events
  • Prepare New Associate onboarding materials
  • Oversee onboarding/HR paperwork process

Additional Role Functions:

The Senior Legal Recruiting Coordinator will also need to demonstrate skills and other intangibles to be successful.  Examples below are not exhaustive and may be supplemented and changed, as necessary:

  • Prepare and distribute department documents and materials
  • Provide meeting support, including scheduling meetings
  • Update and maintain department calendars
  • Enter accurate and timely department data into various databases
  • Maintain files
  • Prepare check requests and expense reports
  • Provide event support
  • Actively participate in team and Firm meetings
  • Provide status of all responsibilities and tasks, as needed
  • Escalate risks and issues appropriately and when necessary
  • Build and foster working relationships with colleagues and business partners across the Firm
  • Provide excellent customer service
  • Other duties as assigned 


  • Supervise temps and interns when applicable
  • Maintain recruiting timeline for events and projects
  • Coordinate Firmwide purchase of Kirkland branded gifts and giveaways
  • Assist with budget tracking year round and preparation for annual budget process
  • Respond to inquiries from attorneys/staff, as needed
  • Assist with administrative support
  • Respond actively, thoroughly and courteously to the needs of clients and internal requests within the firm
  • Work effectively and willingly with others

Qualifications & Requirements

Education, Work Experience, Skills

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of recruiting experience in a law firm or professional service industry.  The candidate must also demonstrate strong leadership, problem-solving, and strategic planning skills, and the ability to work across all levels of management with various personality types; build relationships, be proactive, stay organized, and multi‑task in a fast‑paced, pressured environment.  A Bachelor’s degree is required, along with superior verbal and written communication skills.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and expertise regarding lateral attorney recruitment activities;
  • Strong leadership and teamwork skills;
  • Strong problem-solving skills;
  • Strong planning and organizational skills;
  • Ability to design short-term and long-term goals, with clear criteria to measure success and return on investment;
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines;
  • Ability to excel in a multiple authorities environment;
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills;
  • A proactive approach and the ability to work "hands-on" as required;
  • Ability to interact with partners, coupled with a presence that engenders confidence from firm management, attorneys, and candidates;
  • Strong presentation skills combined with confidence and poise;
  • A Bachelor’s degree combined with a minimum of five years of recruiting experience, preferably in a large law firm or other professional services environment;
  • Proficiency in the use of software, including Microsoft Office. Experience with ViDesktop preferred.
