Essential Job Functions


This position will support the Business Intelligence (BI) efforts of the Firm, as part of the Marketing & Business Development (BD) Department. The BI team pairs information with insight to equip our partners with vital knowledge and drive new business initiatives forward. As a Specialist, this role will advance research requests and strategic projects using various investigative methods and data collection/aggregation.

Key responsibilities include mining a variety of resources to create intelligence briefings, compiling competitive metrics, and managing high-level cross-marketing and targeting projects. General industry and/or practice-based research projects may also be assigned as needed. A successful candidate will have a thorough knowledge of corporate transactions including, M&A, litigation, restructuring and IP matters. You must have strong analytical and communication skills and be able to convey complex information simply and concisely. Attention to detail is imperative.

This position will report to the BI Manager in Chicago. The BI group operates alongside more than 120 diverse problem-solvers and advisers dedicated to Kirkland’s overall business development, marketing and communications function. Our international team provides seamless service to some of the brightest minds in the legal industry, emphasizing quality, innovation and responsiveness.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (This list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented and changed as necessary.)

  • Gather data from various sources/databases to compile a variety of intelligence briefings, including (but not limited to):
    • company profiles
    • relationship intelligence documents
    • biographical dossiers
  • Lead high-level research and targeting projects for various practice groups.
  • Monitor alerts and news flow to support proactive BI team initiatives.
  • Conduct competitive intelligence and benchmarking research within an industry or among peer firms.
  • Maintain best practices with regard to data collection and mining, including internal database audits and updates.

  • Manage additional research and organizational functions as assigned by management.
  • Assist with various marketing initiatives that intersect with other functional areas within the marketing context.
  • Assist with data visualization/dashboard projects.

Qualifications & Requirements


Education, Work Experience, Skills

  • A Bachelor’s degree and more than five years’ experience in the workforce is required in either a law firm, finance or investment banking environment.
  • Excellent client service orientation and listening skills, with comfort interacting with key Business Development and senior Firm personnel.
  • Proven ability to organize and manage a diverse range of projects, prioritizing multiple tasks with competing deadlines (at times in high-pressure situations).
  • Meticulous methods of information acquisition, compilation, and communication (including the use of online information databases, tools and resources); attention to detail is imperative.
  • Superior analytical skill, with the ability to absorb, refine, and concisely convey complex information and make connections across disciplines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to cultivate meaningful team and stakeholder relationships. Diplomacy, intellectual curiosity and a positive attitude/sense of humor is preferred.


  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, particularly an expertise with Excel, PowerPoint and Word, is required. Experience with Adobe, InterAction and SharePoint and a working knowledge of other platforms include QLIK, Lex Machina, Capital IQ, Prequin, Pitchbook, Manzama, and Thompson Reuters is preferred.


  • This job operates in a fast-paced, professional office environment. A poised demeanor and adaptability are important. Occasional overtime work may be requested.
