Essential Job Functions


Kirkland & Ellis LLP is seeking a full-time Diversity & Inclusion Manager focused on Marketing and Communications to advance Kirkland’s diversity and inclusion initiatives while collaborating with various attorneys and functional teams at the Firm.

The Diversity & Inclusion Manager will be an integral member of the Firmwide (FW) Diversity & Inclusion team (D&I), and will collaborate closely with our Legal Recruiting and Development (LRD) and Business Development (BD) teams. In partnership with key stakeholders, the manager will lead communications, marketing and D&I programming aligned to Kirkland’s diverse community and affinity group culture. This includes diversity-focused collateral development, event execution, collaborating with Firm committees, attorneys and staff to foster a collegial culture that embraces greater inclusion while supporting the Global Director of D&I (the Director).

Primary responsibilities include owning D&I communications (from strategy to execution), internal and external program marketing, and managing budgets, sponsorships and awards processes.

The position requires at least seven years of related business experience, preferably in a law school, law firm or other professional services firm. We seek a driven, hands-on professional who has the ability to effectively communicate and present with confidence and collaborate across functional areas, levels of seniority and offices. The ideal candidate must have strong management, problem-solving and interpersonal skills as well as exercise excellent judgment. The individual must also have the ability to thrive in a demanding, fast-paced environment while building positive and productive working relationships.

In addition, candidates must be self-motivated, highly organized and able to multitask and prioritize competing demands.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (This list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented and changed as necessary.)

  • D&I Marketing & Communications: Draft, prepare and review D&I communications including D&I marketing materials, industry panel presentations, invitations, event-related scripts for Kirkland attorneys and staff and other PR or marketing materials, as necessary; collaborate with the Director, BD, the SDLRD, D&I partners and leaders to promote D&I materials, initiatives, awards and achievements; monitor and promote social media for D&I-related content.
  • Diversity Recruiting and Pipeline Initiatives: In partnership with the Legal Recruiting & Development team, affinity groups, student groups the SDLRD, and FW hiring partners, advance diversity recruiting initiatives such as Kirkland’s Diversity Scholars, ALLSA and Diversity Fellowship programs alongside various pipeline programs such as SEO Law Fellowship, and incubate new ideas to enhance long-term relationships with various law schools and student groups.
  • Diversity & Inclusion Programming - Affinity Group Engagement: In consultation with the Director, develop, market and promote D&I programming and overall strategies to build a more inclusive culture, particularly through the Firm’s affinity group communities; expand and advance local D&I programming in collaboration with affinity group leads, D&I leaders and LRD and D&I staff.
  • Budget: Track and monitor various diversity budgets including the local attorney engagement budget dedicated to local D&I and affinity group activities.
  • Sponsorships and Foundation Requests: Provide direction for sponsorship spending and allocations; provide oversight for sponsorship requests.
  • Mentoring: Serve as an ally and advocate for diverse attorneys, recruits and new hires.
  • Networking: Build positive external relationships with clients, alumni, national and local bar associations and law schools in support of our diversity and inclusion strategy
  • Collaboration/People Management: Work seamlessly with the Firmwide D&I team to share best practices, identify new areas of opportunity, and contribute to key initiatives. Work hand-in-hand with LRD as well as BD. Manage one direct report, a Senior Coordinator for D&I, who is based in Chicago.
  • Other: Facilitate special projects and other manager duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements


Education, Work Experience, Skills

Collaboration, proactive management of responsibilities, responsiveness, and outstanding commitment to excellence are essential for this position.  Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess these qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required; seeking candidates with seven years of professional experience in a law firm, corporation, professional services or law school environment.
  • Skilled program marketing and communications strategist; a dynamic and organized project manager with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and meet concrete deadlines in a fast-paced environment, have a positive/can-do attitude and be a team player.
  • Maintaining positive relationships, both internally and externally, while upholding a client service orientation.
  • Proven ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion in dealing with highly confidential information.
  • Strong familiarity with standard office technology applications such as Microsoft Office Suite required, with particular emphasis on Outlook, PowerPoint and Microsoft Excel.
