Essential Job Functions

Kirkland & Ellis is seeking a Business Development Specialist to support our San Francisco and Palo Alto offices. This position provides thorough, tactical business development and marketing support to the Bay Area, and as necessary, the West Coast Business Development Department. The Business Development Specialist will report directly to the Business Development Associate Director for the Bay Area, and will be primarily responsible for executing initiatives included in the development plans for Kirkland’s San Francisco and Palo Alto offices. The individual will also handle any other special projects assigned by the West Coast Director of Business Development. Essential Job Functions

  1. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assistance with: 
    • Developing business pitches and presentations, including both basic informational materials and highly tailored content bespoke to specific opportunities and engagements
    • Planning and executing all aspects of client events, speaking engagements and sponsorships in the Bay Area and elsewhere depending on attorney needs
    • Communication collateral development
    • Drafting surveys and legal directory submissions across Bay Area practice areas
    • Regional matter tracking
    • Conducting high-level and in-depth research in support of pitches, presentations, client meetings, events, etc.
    • Other general department support as necessary, including practice area description and attorney biography maintenance, CRM content maintenance, industry/client trend tracking, pitch and event tracking and reporting, etc.
    • CRM expertise to further a wide range of Business Development objectives
  2. Candidate may also be called upon to assist with various other marketing initiatives that intersect with other functional areas within the marketing context

Successful candidates will have had previous AmLaw 50 or other professional services experience.  Strong knowledge of corporate, litigation and intellectual property practices desired.  Specific knowledge of private equity M&A, and investment fund formation is considered a plus.

The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships with lawyers and staff to achieve results. The candidate must also work effectively as part of a growing Firmwide Business Development team. The candidate will be responsible for having a solid command of a number of different technology applications to produce a high-end and professional work product, including the Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, and InterAction (or similar CRM). There will be a strong emphasis on PowerPoint and Excel. Strong project management and sound judgment skills are also necessary. The candidate will possess outstanding proofreading and communication (oral and written) skills; the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment; a very strong attention to detail and a professional demeanor.

The candidate must possess strong business judgment, discretion and confidentiality at all times.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree.
  • 5 years business development and marketing experience gained within a law firm or professional services industry. Experience in investment banking, venture capital or private equity will also be considered, and experience at an AmLaw 50 law firm is highly preferred.
  • A strong work ethic and dedication to producing quality work product is essential.
  • A driven, enthusiastic attitude with an eagerness to take the appropriate initiative.
  • Knowledge of, or dedication to learning the nuances of unique and diverse practice areas, including, but not limited to private equity M&A, investment fund formation, debt finance, technology & IP transactions, commercial litigation, intellectual property litigation, etc. Cross-practice versatility is highly preferable, but subject-specialization is also valued.
  • Strong skills in MS Office software with expertise in Microsoft SharePoint, Excel and PowerPoint preferred. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and excellent communication skills necessary to maintain effective relationships with internal and external clients.
  • Excellent client service orientation and listening skills, comfortable interacting with Firm leadership and key department personnel, and possess diplomacy, patience and enthusiasm.
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced environment, with impeccable written and verbal communication skills, organizational ability, project management and prioritization.
  • Extremely thorough and detail-oriented, with outstanding proofreading and fact-checking abilities.
  • Ability to thrive in an electronic environment and utilize technology to deliver information.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Prior InterAction or other CRM knowledge highly preferable.
  • Experience in event planning and management is preferable.
