Essential Job Functions


Kirkland & Ellis LLP is seeking a full-time New York Diversity & Inclusion Manager (“the Manager”) to advance Kirkland’s local diversity and inclusion (“D&I”) initiatives while collaborating with various attorneys and functional teams at the Firm.

The Manager will be an integral member of the New York and Firmwide D&I teams. In partnership with key stakeholders, the manager will provide support in the diversity and inclusion arena and facilitate local diversity and inclusion initiatives. This includes diversity-focused recruiting (on campus and lateral), working with local committees, attorneys, and staff to foster a collegial culture that embraces diversity and inclusion, driving community-building initiatives, affinity group programming, Women’s Leadership Initiative (WLI) activities, law school relationships, and other external partnerships and sponsorships while supporting the Global Director of D&I (the Director).

Primary responsibilities include internal and external diversity programming, events, budgets, sponsorships, awards, communications, and analyzing industry trends and peer-firm initiatives. The Manager will also contribute to Firmwide initiatives and special projects, as needed, to advance our attorney recruiting, retention, and promotion efforts.

The position requires at least five years of related business experience, preferably in a law school, law firm, or other professional services firm. We seek a driven, hands-on professional who has the ability to collaborate across functional areas, levels of seniority, and offices. The ideal candidate must have excellent judgment and strong management, problem-solving, oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. The individual must have the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while building positive working relationships. In addition, candidates must be self-motivated, organized, and able to multitask and prioritize competing demands. A demonstrated long-term commitment to D&I is required.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (This list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented and changed as necessary.)

  • Diversity Recruiting and Pipeline Initiatives: In partnership with our New York hiring partners and the Legal Recruiting & Development (LRD) team, advance diversity recruiting initiatives such as Kirkland’s Diversity Scholars, ALLSA, and Diversity Fellowship programs alongside various pipeline programs; in partnership with the Director and Firmwide hiring partners, advance Firmwide diversity recruiting initiatives; develop new ideas to enhance long-term relationships with various law schools and student groups
  • Diversity Programming: In concert with the Director, develop D&I programming and overall strategies to build a more inclusive culture; advance local recruiting programming in collaboration with attorneys and staff; share resources and ideas
  • Budget: Track and monitor various diversity budgets
  • Sponsorships and Foundation Requests: Provide direction for sponsorship spending and allocations; provide oversight for sponsorship requests
  • Communications: Collaborate with the Director and various teams to market and promote initiatives, awards, and achievements
  • Mentoring: Serve as an ally and advocate for diverse attorneys and recruits
  • Networking: Build positive external relationships with clients, alumni, and law schools in support of our D&I strategy 
  • Collaboration: Work seamlessly with the Firmwide D&I team to report on New York office progress, share best practices and resources, identify new areas of opportunity, and contribute to key Firmwide initiatives. Work hand in hand with the NY LRD team who drive attorney recruiting, integration, and engagement
  • Other: Facilitate special projects and other duties as assigned

Qualifications & Requirements

Education, Work Experience, Skills

Team work, ownership of assigned work, responsiveness, and outstanding commitment to excellence are essential for this position.  Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess these qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required. Seeking candidates with five to seven years of professional experience in a law firm, corporation, professional services, or law school environment
  • The ideal candidate will be a dynamic and organized project manager with excellent oral and written communication skills, have the ability to multitask and meet concrete deadlines in a fast-paced environment, have a positive/can-do attitude, and be an excellent team player
  • Maintaining positive relationships, both internally and externally, while upholding a client service orientation and using sound independent judgment and discretion in dealing with highly confidential information are also required
  • Strong familiarity with standard office technology applications such as Microsoft Office Suite, with particular emphasis on PowerPoint and Microsoft Excel is required
