Essential Job Functions

Business Intelligence (BI) is one of the fastest-growing areas in the firm, and deals with the lifeblood of strategic decision making: data. Pairing information with insight, the team equips partners with vital knowledge and drives new business initiatives forward.

As part of the Marketing & Business Development (BD) Department, the Business Intelligence Manager in New York will have oversight of BI initiatives and team members in the office. This person will collaborate with BI leadership, colleagues across marketing/BD disciplines, and senior attorneys and staff to identify high-value projects and opportunities; he or she will also be an active contributor to broader team and department growth and development.

This position reports to the Global BI Associate Director, with additional guidance from the BD Director in New York. The BI group operates alongside more than 100 diverse problem-solvers and advisers dedicated to Kirkland’s overall business development, marketing and communications function. This international team provides seamless service to some of the brightest minds in the legal industry, with an emphasis on quality, innovation and responsiveness.


  • Manage on-the-ground operations for the BI group in New York
  • Cultivate a deep understanding of Kirkland’s clientele and key practice groups and serve as a subject matter expert regarding peer firms and strategic direction
  • Partner with the Transactional BI Associate Director for:
    • professional development for NY team members,
    • scoping-out and coordinating project pipeline(s), and
    • contributing to Firmwide team direction
  • Maintain awareness of industry trends and best practices for mining and normalizing data from a variety of sources to compile intelligence briefings (including company/firm profiles, relationship analysis, biographical dossiers, etc.); create such documents during peak periods and ensure BI team is meeting or exceeding data standards.
  • Lead high-level research and targeting projects across practices for the New York office
  • Monitor alerts and news flow to support proactive BI team initiatives, and aid in development of new initiatives and best practices
  • Conduct competitive intelligence and benchmarking research within an industry or among peer firms


  • Manage additional research and organizational functions as assigned by management
  • Assist with various marketing initiatives that intersect with other functional areas within the marketing context

Qualifications & Requirements

Education, Work Experience, Skills

  • A Bachelor’s degree and at least 7 to 10 years’ experience in the workforce is required in either a law firm, finance-related or professional services environment
  • Excellent client service orientation and listening skills, with comfort interacting with senior partners, key BD colleagues and senior Firm personnel
  • Proven ability to organize and manage a diverse range of projects, prioritizing multiple tasks with competing deadlines (at times in high-pressure situations) and deploying work effectively across multiple team members or stakeholders
  • Meticulous methods of information acquisition, compilation, and communication (including the use of online information databases, tools and resources); attention to detail is imperative
  • Solid analytical skill, with the ability to absorb, refine, and concisely convey complex information; ability to display data in new and efficient visual representations is preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills to cultivate meaningful team and stakeholder relationships, and superior client service orientation
  • An executive presence, business savvy, diplomacy and discretion around sensitive business matters
  • Intellectual curiosity and a positive attitude/sense of humor is preferred


Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, particularly an expertise with Excel, PowerPoint and Word, is required. Experience with Adobe and SharePoint are preferred.
