Essential Job Functions

Kirkland & Ellis is seeking a Firmwide Litigation Training Portfolio Manager to join our Firmwide Legal Recruiting & Development (“LRD”) Department.

Reporting to the Firmwide Director of Legal Education & Development, the successful candidate will be the first point of contact for our Litigation Sponsor and Stakeholders, leading our global Firmwide Litigation Training Portfolio.

The Firmwide Litigation Training Portfolio Manager is a highly visible and influential role within the firm, and responsible for a broad portfolio. This role, will have the opportunity to ensure effective and high-quality learning delivery and deployment for litigation training. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the Firmwide Director of Legal Education & Development, the Litigation Training Committee, and other key stakeholders.

This critical leader will support the firm’s litigation practice to help elevate our global learning and development function.


  • Working closely with our attorney stakeholders to foster the appropriate firm direction and implementation for litigation training and development initiatives

  • Coordinating, deploying, and surveying litigation attorney training and development programs to align with Kirkland culture and standards

    • Managing the calendar of programming and execution annually across all offices

    • Managing an ongoing survey data set, analyzing feedback, and reaction data from constituents annually

    • Maintaining historical information for programming

    • Overseeing online presence for relevancy, maintenance, and attorney usage 

  • Evaluating litigation training programs and recommending future strategies

  • Managing media opportunities for learning programs and events as needed

  • Managing the detailed line items for the litigation portfolio budget:

    • Planning and forecasting budget expenses

    • Tracking planned expenses versus actual spend

    • Working with stakeholders as required to speak to, adjust, or analyze budget needs   

  • Planning and executing KITA (Kirkland Institute for Trial Advocacy) in Chicago, Washington DC, and all other KITA-related event

    • End-to-end coordination of all event planning and management activities for each learning program

    • Applying a detailed approach to thoughtfully balance attorney time and learning experience

  • Managing and participating where needed across CLE and leadership trainings

  • Monitoring compliance with CLE requirements and overseeing CLE accreditation for in-house litigation training programs

  • Directly and indirectly managing the needs and maintenance of the litigation curriculum (including, but not limited to):

    • Coordination and delivery excellence

    • Organization and maintenance of learning assets

    • Thoughtful support of continuous improvement

  • Working closely with our Litigation Sponsor and related stakeholders to support our Litigation learning portfolio through:

    • Managing relationships

    • Managing attorney learning needs

    • Considering Kirkland culture and standards

  • Collaborating with dynamic team members and stakeholders, such as attorneys, knowledge management, and non-attorney staff

  • Working independently across a highly dynamic, growing firm


  • Seven to ten years’ working experience in learning and development in a global law firm, professional services, or global organization

  • Demonstrated experience in various aspects of the end-to-end learning cycle such as needs analysis, learning design, learning coordination, learning delivery, and learning evaluation

  • Demonstrated success deploying large, scalable, and repeatable learning events

  • Ability to influence across complex organizational boundaries within a diverse culture

  • Demonstrated experience working in and navigating complex systems

  • Innate leadership abilities with enthusiasm for the role that inspires others

  • Persistence and a focused determination to overcome obstacles while pursuing organizational goals

  • Initiative to learn and adapt within a challenging, demanding environment


  • Knowledge of learning and development methodology, including instructional design and development, digital learning, virtual classroom learning, instructor-led classroom learning (simulations and facilitated learning) workplace learning, and coaching

  • Assessing learning programming for maintenance, impact, and alignment with firm needs; providing recommendations as appropriate for learning experiences

  • Survey development/learning measurement that considers audience needs for continuous improvement

  • Working knowledge of Learning Management Systems (LMS); learning tools, processes, and procedures

  • Identifying, developing, leading, and managing key external vendor relationships

  • Building and fostering working realtionships with business partners across a global firm/organization  

Qualifications & Requirements

Education, Expertise, Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree required; preferred master’s degree in Educational Leadership or Administration, Curriculum and Instruction, Human Resources, or related discipline
  • Law firm experience is a plus and highly desirable
  • Senior level expertise across a variety of instructional methods and training techniques
  • Large learning event management, planning, development, and execution
  • Strong project management skills and business acumen
  • Experience using data for program improvement
  • Skilled in demonstrating thoughtful collaboration with leadership
  • Ability to coach, mentor, and manage teams (directly and indirectly)
  • Exceptional ability to engage with people at all levels of an organization
  • Solid influencing, negotiation, and facilitation skills with the ability to foster and maintain collaborative relationships
  • Clear and positive oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent presentation skills


  • This position functions in a professional office environment
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, photocopiers, and audio-visual equipment
