Essential Job Functions

As a member of the Firmwide Legal Recruiting & Development Department (“LRD”), the Legal Education & Development Manager for the Los Angeles/Century City location will provide strategic direction and implementation for all attorney education and performance management at the local office level, while executing Firmwide initiatives and strategy.  The position is highly visible within the organization and responsible for primary oversight and administration of attorney training programs including practice area-specific trainings and administration of CLE and attorney admissions status.  This role is also charged with management of the annual Associate performance review process.  The position will work in collaboration with other LRD functions as well as other Firm Administrative departments to help develop and implement these initiatives on a local basis. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (This list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented and changed as necessary.)

Legal Education & Development

  • Provide strategic direction and implementation for local attorney training and performance review initiatives.
  • Evaluate and assess all aspects of education & professional development programs, including analysis of development opportunities, course congruency and consistency, and other training resources.  Recommend future strategies.
  • Manage annual Associate review, upward review and bonus processes.
  • Manage local CLE trainings, KITA local mock-trial training for summer programming, local Kirkland management and leadership trainings, and participate in the development of Firmwide KITA training programs.
  • Work with Firmwide Legal Education to support practice area-specific trainings, CLE management and reporting.
  • Monitor compliance with CLE requirements and oversee CLE accreditation for in-house training programs.
  • Maintain licensed attorney Continuing Legal Education records and track attorney compliance using CE Manager (Micron).
  • Work with the Firmwide CLE portfolio team to align and execute on CLE process and related audit reporting.
  • Assist with the coordination of team and practice group meetings.
  • Coordinate with key departments to efficiently execute annual training programs.
  • Communicate and collaborate with other offices on program schedule, handouts, logistical and technical meeting support.
  • Track attendance for in-house programs and prepare participation reports

Management & Administrative Responsibilities

  • Prepare annual departmental goals and budget.
  • Review and approve attorney training expenses.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education, Work Experience, Skills

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of eight to ten (8-10) years of management experience in a law firm or professional service industry, preferably with strategic education and professional development experience.  Candidates must have strong interpersonal skills, supervisory, and communication skills, project management and change management experience, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.  The ability to work effectively with all levels of management, and across all Kirkland departments and offices, is required. 

Technologies/Software

  • Computer proficient with knowledge and understanding of Microsoft Office (Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel).Experience in various learning-related platforms including LMS and CLE Tracking preferred, experience in CE Manager a plus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • As a key member of the local office staff, flexibility with work hours and location is necessary.  Nights and weekends, on-site and off-site, are required on many occasions.  Ability to attend internal and external events outside of typical work hours is a must.
  • This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
