Essential Job Functions

This opening is a professional position supporting attorneys in the Investment Funds Practice Group. The position will report directly to the Investment Funds Manager in New York and the candidate must work effectively as part of a growing Firmwide Business Development team. In this role, you will also communicate and collaborate daily with nearly 100 diverse problem-solvers and advisers dedicated to the broader business development, marketing and communications efforts of the Firm. Our international BD team provides seamless service to our attorneys with a focus on quality, innovation and responsiveness.

Provides general marketing and business development assistance to Investment Funds Group attorneys by working closely with the Investment Funds Manager. Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with and supporting the Business Development Manager and the Investment Funds Group to understand market position, develop strategic plans and drive marketing efforts to maintain and grow practice and industry position.
  • Prepare, maintain and execute client-facing pitch materials, responses to RFPs and client presentations from start to finish, including identifying appropriate content, proofreading, formatting (must have exceptional PowerPoint skills), editing, printing, binding and delivery.
    • Incorporate regulatory-focused materials as needed into pitches based on client meeting (SEC examination materials, SEC enforcement updates, proposed and adopted legislation and trends)
  • Provide research, coordination and other logistical assistance in connection with the origination and execution of new business pitches and related client development meetings and activities.
  • Assists with recording activities, current contact information and other meaningful back end data entry in the Firm’s data management system, InterAction.
  • Coordinate the compilation and submission of materials and references for the Investment Funds Group in connection with various legal industry guides, e.g. Chambers, Legal 500, etc.
  • Provide meeting notes during internal monthly Investment Funds meetings
  • Assist with various bespoke marketing and business development initiatives, (e.g., client cocktail reception, panel presentations, CLE presentations, webinars, conferences, etc.) and support the Senior Events Specialist with event coordination, back end data entry and execution as needed.
  • Organize, facilitate and track meetings with key industry constituents, e.g., placement agents, lenders, local counsel, public relations firms, fund administrators, etc.
  • Work with the Business Development team to expand upon existing Firm templates to bring a higher level of graphic design, creativity and visual impact to the Group’s marketing materials that incorporate visual elements that meet and promote Kirkland’s brand standards.
  • In coordination with the Global Business Intelligence Team, research and prepare intelligence reports on potential Investment Funds clients.
  • In coordination with the Business Development PR team ensure coverage of successful matters, initiatives and and ensuring that significant matters are publicized internally and externally in accordance with the Firm's public relations policy.
  • Look up data on the SEC website including pulling form ADVs, SEC speeches and SEC examination priorities lists
  • Conducts peer firm analysis for the Investment Funds Group.
  • Provide updates to the Investment Funds attorneys’ resume collection for the website and proposals/pitches, including the facilitation of an annual Investment Funds Group resume audit.
  • Handle other requests or projects on an as-needed basis.

Qualifications & Requirements

The ideal candidate will have familiarity with/exposure to private equity fund formation and the marketing and fundraising of private investment funds, including an understanding of active sponsors, investors, placement agents and other constituents in the private equity and/or other alternative investment funds marketplace. The ideal candidate will also have an understanding of SEC exams and enforcement actions along with a basic understanding of registered and unregistered fund products.

The ideal candidate will be a proactive and creative self-starter who can support a broad range of market outreach, market intelligence, information gathering and synthesis, presentation, brand building and business development projects and initiatives, and eventually, over time, originate additional such projects and initiatives.

The model candidate will possess outstanding proofreading and communication (oral and written) skills; the ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment, very strong attention to detail and a professional demeanor. He/she will have solid knowledge of a number of different programs/applications to produce a high-end and professional work product, including Microsoft Office Suite (particularly PowerPoint and Excel), Microsoft SharePoint, and contact relationship management (CRM) systems. Experience with Preqin, Pitchbook, Private Equity Analyst, The Deal’s Private Raise, Manzama, BoardEx and/or Relationship Science will inure to the benefit of the candidate.  In addition, the candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, an outgoing and client-friendly personality and the demeanor to interact in a positive and professional manner with clients and potential clients in a variety of settings. 

A four-year degree is required. Private equity, hedge fund, placement agent or investment banking experience is preferred. Law firm experience will be considered.
