Essential Job Functions

Kirkland & Ellis LLP is recruiting for a seasoned and sophisticated Business Development Manager who will develop and work collaboratively with the Director of Business Development for the West Coast on all business development initiatives for the Los Angeles office. This professional will manage Los Angeles-based business development initiatives and be a strategic adviser to the attorneys. They will provide innovative business development initiatives to maintain the Los Angeles market share and also develop projects designed to increase revenue by expanding the Firms’ client base within the region.  This regionally focused role will support some of the Firm’s most significant Practice Groups, including its highly regarded Corporate (Private Equity, Fund Formation, Real Estate, Debt Finance) Intellectual Property and Litigation Practice Groups.

Firmwide Business Development Team:

In this position, the Los Angeles Business Development Manager will be a key member of a growing West Coast Business Development team, as well as being a leader and peer in the greater Business Development Firmwide team. The Manager will work closely with the Los Angeles Business Development team and the Northern California Business Development team to strategize and execute on all initiatives. The Manager will also collaborate closely (through knowledge sharing, decision making, and coordination) with the Firmwide Business Development team, specifically, Practice Group-aligned Business Development professionals in each of the Corporate, Intellectual Property and Litigation Practices across the US.

Core Position Functions:
The essential areas of focus for this position include:

  • Leading and consulting with the Los Angeles partnership, key committees, and senior practice leaders on the development and execution of meaningful strategic business development and marketing initiatives for the region;
  • Providing market and client intelligence to the Los Angeles partnership to identify viable new business from current clients, as well as identifying additional market share opportunities with prospect clients (and leveraging all internal relationships in a collaborative manner in doing so);
  • Contribute to all regional BD meetings to help align business strategy and cross-collaboration efforts firm wide;
  • Conduct individual and group business intelligence to support the partnerships’ key BD goals;
  • Work with the partnership to develop clear, concise and compelling marketing material for use in proposals and formal RFP responses, survey and directory submissions and website information;
  • Proactively provide tracking and reporting analysis on the BD efforts of the region, along with re-alignment where needed;
  • Researching and developing on-point visibility opportunities, such as industry seminars and speaking opportunities, sponsorship opportunities and targeted events, to increase an individual or group’s profile;
  • Working with all functions of the greater Business Development & Marketing team, including Operations, Development, Systems, Communications and Business Intelligence.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required.
  • A minimum of 7 years’ experience within professional services with proven business development, client development or marketing experience is required. At least 2 of these years will have been in a managerial role where you have developed and led BD efforts and initiatives for a firm;
  • Exceptional communication skills, including an innate ability to communicate to the stakeholders on overall efforts, progress and results;
  • Very strong project management abilities to lead and control large, complex pitches, proposals and RFPs.  Niche practice area expertise is highly desirable the prominent Practice Groups of Corporate, Litigation, and IP;
  • Strong background in business intelligence, target research and client prospecting;
  • Able to easily and quickly develop rapport and build relationships while displaying key influencing skills,
  • Must possess an executive presence, political and business savvy and display diplomacy, and respect.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and be able to easily pivot as deadlines and priorities move and change, while maintaining a problem-solving and solutions focused mentality and work ethic.
