Essential Job Functions

The Associate Director of Metadata Solutions will play a critical data capability enablement role within the newly formed Data Governance Solutions group. This group serves as the technology enablement partner (defining the “How”) of the business data governance team (defining the “What”).

This individual will be accountable for the configuration, deployment and operationalization of metadata management and data lineage platforms and tools at the firm. This individual will closely work with the business data governance team to elicit and prioritize data catalog, business and technical metadata management, and data lineage requirements; and develop and execute a plan to incrementally deliver automation capabilities.

The Associate Director of Metadata Solutions will serve as the metadata product(s) owner for the enterprise and be accountable for the overall administration of the metadata management and data lineage toolset including functional and technical configuration, on-going operations, maintenance, and enhancement. This individual will be expected to curate and deliver product demos and awareness sessions in support of organizational data literacy and change management efforts driven by the business data governance team.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (This list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented and changed as necessary.)

Overall metadata and data lineage product management accountabilities

  • Contribute towards the evaluation and selection of the future-state enterprise metadata platform
  • Lead the platform functional and technical configuration to address requirements as defined by the business data governance team such as UI configuration and customization, enablement of workflows, notifications, etc.
  • Manage user administration activities such as account setup, role-based permissions, etc.
  • Coordinate with internal IT stakeholders to manage connectivity/access to and integration with cloud and on-prem enterprise applications and data assets as well as other data governance tools
  • Develop and maintain the metadata product evolution roadmap and target-state solution architecture that serves as the north star for incrementally delivering automation capabilities across the enterprise
  • Own the coordination and communication with vendor(s) to prioritize and drive implementation product enhancements, bug fixes, etc.
  • Work with the business data governance team to define operational and performance SLAs and implement mechanisms to monitor compliance
  • Support the business data governance team in organizational data literacy and change management efforts by setting up environments, tailoring content and conducting demos / roadshows

Operational Responsibilities – Metadata Management

  • Work with the business data governance team to collect and confirm business metadata management requirements and develop a business metadata model (business term attributes, hierarchies, relationships, etc.)
  • Participate in business data governance forums and workshops to collect and validate business terms, definitions, and other metadata attributes
  • Automate processes to ingest, validate, drive approval, and publish business metadata content
  • Work with data custodians and application owners to map business metadata to underlying technical metadata – applications, data bases, schemas, tables, fields, etc.
  • Automate processes to scan and ingest technical metadata into the platform and link up with business metadata
  • Collaborate and iterate on UI and workflow design to optimize end user experience
  • Develop and execute on a plan to migrate legacy business and technical metadata content residing across multiple content repositories into the future-state metadata platform
  • Develop and/or lead change management efforts across all phases of projects and initiatives to drive the Firm’s culture of continuous improvement

Operational responsibilities – Data Lineage Management

  • Work with the IT application owners and custodians to do a high-level analysis of the enterprise application data asset landscape to identify key data sourcing, integration, storage, and consumption points
  • Develop a strategy and plan to prioritize the capture, expansion, and maintenance of data lineage across the enterprise data landscape including the harvesting / reverse engineering of existing data lineage maps and artefacts
  • Configure and implement the data lineage tool to automatically scan for and ingest technical metadata across on-prem and cloud data assets and integration mechanisms to create and expand on the lineage baseline
  • Implement a scheduled and / or event-driven mechanism to detect changes to systems/applications, underlying data assets, resulting integration breakpoints, etc. and notify stakeholders to drive change impact assessments
  • Configure the data lineage tool to enable visualization / summarization of data flows at the element, table, schema, and application levels
  • Leverage the output of data lineage activities to develop and maintain the authoritative data asset inventory, and inform the enterprise architecture of data redundancies and integration chokepoints for strategic remediation

Qualifications & Requirements

Education, Work Experience, Skills

Required:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, preferably, in data analytics, computer science, engineering, information sciences or equivalent field
  • 12+ years of experience across data governance and management disciplines, including but not limited to, business metadata modeling, data lineage development, data source analysis and profiling, authoritative data identification, and data quality management
  • Prior data integration design and development experience (ETL, API integration, etc.) working across cloud and on-prem data environments
  • 10+ years of hands-on experience as a data governance specialist or a similar role with data governance platforms and tools such as IBM IGC, Informatica, Talend, Collibra, etc.
  • 10+ years of experience with SQL or other data querying methods
  • Strong analysis, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills – ability to digest multiple data points from a variety of business and technology data stakeholders, ask the right follow-up questions to separate signal from noise, identify and connect the real dots, craft emergent data themes, and identify contributing factors
  • Excellent written communication skills including development of design specification documents, data flow diagrams, process models / decision trees, power point storyboards, executive summaries, succinct meeting minutes, etc.
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills – ability to tactfully influence and gain trust of business and technology stakeholders and incrementally drive change; fact-based storytelling with data to demonstrate value of metadata management to the business
  • Proven change managment skills

Preferred:

  • Big 4 or equivalent technology consulting experience
  • Master’s degree / MBA
  • Exposure to data privacy and security governance and management processes
  • Prior data modeling and architecture experience
  • Experience executing project or program management responsibilities including development of project charters, implementation planning, dependency management, scope/cost/schedule management, etc.

Technologies/Software

  • Experience with data lineage tools such as Collibra, Manta, IBM IGC etc.
  • Experience with data catalog or metadata platforms such as Talend, Alation, Collibra, etc.
  • Experience with reporting and visualization tools such as Power BI, Tableau, Qlik, etc.

Certificates, Licensures, Registrations

  • PMP is a plus
  • Other industry-recognized data governance / management certifications
  • Metadata management vendor / platform certifications
