Essential Job Functions

The Technical Advisors are a group of in-house technical advisors with advanced degrees in science and engineering.  Typically, a Technical Advisor will be assigned to IP Litigation cases.  The advisor works with all of the attorneys on the matter, typically from commencement of the case through trial.  Successful advisors develop solid working relationships with senior partners and clients.  They also continually find new and better ways of performing research, improve processes through the application of new technology, and coordinate with the Firm’s Library Services as an additional resource for information. 

Essential Functions: (This list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented and changed as necessary.)

  • Advisors are expected to use their science and technology background to facilitate the flow of information between inventors, experts, attorneys, and clients.
  • Advisors are expected to assist attorneys in developing technical arguments and presenting scientific and technical data to those without scientific backgrounds.
  • Advisors are expected to assist in all aspects of the investigation of each case that they are assigned to.
  • Advisors are expected to assist the attorneys during document review; they will also assist attorneys with witness preparation and may attend depositions to offer guidance and clarity on technical matters.
  • Prior to and during trials, Advisors will be expected to develop and provide guidance in presenting technical arguments and preparing demonstrative exhibits. 

Qualifications & Requirements

Education, Work Experience, Skills:

  • All Advisors must have a B.S. or M.S. degree with several years of experience in electrical engineering or computer science.
  • An Advisor will assist attorneys in reviewing, understanding, and relying on scientific or specialized documents.  The Advisor must have a demonstrated ability to analyze specialized data and documents from the perspective of his or her field of study. (i.e., if the Advisor holds an electrical engineering degree, then the Advisor must have a demonstrated ability to review and analyze specialized science and legal documents relating to electrical engineering.)  The Advisor must be able to review a report, pleading, etc. and answer questions clearly and succinctly regarding the scientific contents.  The Advisor must have good writing skills and be able to explain scientific concepts in layman’s terms.  The Advisor may be expected to attend and assist attorneys at depositions, meetings, hearings, trials, etc.  The Advisor must be able to perform a scientific citation check of legal pleadings and other documents.  The Advisor must have a demonstrated ability to perform research and factual investigations relating to his/her field.  The Advisor’s work must always be supervised by a Kirkland & Ellis LLP attorney.

Supervision:

  • The Advisor position falls under the Paralegal Program and all administrative duties remain the same for Paralegals and Advisors.  All work done by Advisors must be under the direct supervision of Kirkland & Ellis LLP attorneys.
