Essential Job Functions

The Finance intern will work on a wide range of tasks and projects to support multiple functions within the Finance organization.  The Finance Intern will gain exposure to a number of different finance activities and staff members and will apply knowledge gained in the classroom to real world situations

This Intern position is designed to be a year round role:  part-time during the school year and additional hours during winter and summer school breaks. There will be flexibility of the intern’s schedule to accommodate school demands, however, the Finance intern will need to work during normal business hours to ensure they receive the appropriate mentoring and guidance from Finance staff.

Essential Functions: (This list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented and changed as necessary.)

  • Review, analyze and assist in processing firm expense invoices.
  • Support tax team in the completion of a variety of tax returns as well as perform tax research.
  • Assist with retrieving financial information and preparing calculations for the Firm’s Investment Partnerships Team
  • Help support the Kirkland & Ellis Foundation’s charitable contribution program
  • Maintain recurring reports and create ad-hoc reports on demand.
  • Prepare various bank and/or account reconciliations.
  • Assist with various billing and collections activities.
  • Perform expense variance analysis research and assist in the compilation of the Finance Department’s budget/forecast
  • Assist in the creation of spreadsheets for data analysis and financial modeling.
  • Support Finance records inventory and retention processes, as well as data management security.
  • Help maintain internal policies and procedures for the Finance department.
  • Assist with filing, scanning and copying of financial data as requested.
  • Other research and special projects on demand.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • The Finance intern must be enrolled in a college or university local to Chicago.
  • Preferred candidate will have a declared major of Accounting, Finance or Business and carry a GPA of 3.2 or higher. 
  • Candidate should have some prior work experience.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills are required.  Attention to detail and the eagerness to learn is imperative.
  • The ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment and consistently meet deadlines.


  • Intermediate level or higher Microsoft Excel skills are required
  • MS Word, PowerPoint Office proficiency

Work Environment:

  • This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
