Essential Job Functions

irkland & Ellis is seeking a dynamic Associate Director to support the marketing and business development (BD) efforts of our Firmwide litigation practice from the New York office. This position reports to the Chief Marketing Officer based in Chicago.

In this role, you will work closely with the lawyers in the group, as well as attorneys in the broader litigation practice, to execute on strategic initiatives to support our litigation brand and drive business opportunities. You will work on projects like pitches, RFPs, sponsorships/events, research, surveys/directories, experience management and partner meetings/retreats and other activities.

We are seeking a self-motivated and persuasive leader with a strong business acumen. You will be a key member and co-lead of the Firmwide Litigation Marketing and BD Team, and serve as a resource for the more than 140 diverse problem-solvers and advisers dedicated to the global business development, marketing and communications activities of the Firm. Our team provides seamless service to our attorneys with a focus on quality, innovation and responsiveness.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (This list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented and changed as necessary.)

  • Support litigators in the full suite of marketing/BD activities including pitches, RFPs, sponsorships/events, marketing collateral and campaigns, marketing research, litigation surveys/directories, experience management, partner meetings/retreats, etc. with a particular focus on Securities, M&A and General Commercial Litigation.
  • Find ways to elevate, promote and distinguish the Kirkland litigation group in the market.
  • Identify new avenues for business development with current and prospective clients, through cross-selling and other efforts.
  • Assist partners to identify opportunities to connect with clients through conferences, sponsorships and speaking engagements.
  • Develop individual partner plans for speaking, writing, and other thought leadership opportunities.
  • Integrate with the broader Firmwide BD team and work with subject matter experts as needed on projects.
  • Collaborate with regional BD staff members and other departments like Knowledge Management, Recruiting, Research Services, etc.
  • Perform litigation tracking and produce daily alerts to attorneys summarizing litigation in certain practice areas and industries.
  • Review and revise partner biographies and draft persuasive and compelling website content and practice materials for the litigation practice.
  • Draft submissions in close collaboration with the Directories team to maintain or increase rankings in important legal directories and contests like Benchmark Litigation, Chambers, Law360, Legal 500, The New York Law Journal, The American Lawyer etc.
  • Team with Media Relations group for press outreach opportunities for the litigation practice and its partners relating to case wins, overall practice visibility, and trends. 
  • Coordinate with the Experience Management team to ensure updated litigation matter information and case descriptions in ContentPilot (experience management system).

•     Manage one litigation BD assistant for the New York office and work closely with litigation BD team members in other regions/subpractices.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education, Work Experience, Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree required; J.D. preferred.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the litigation practice with an emphasis on securities and M&A litigation is required.
  • Minimum 10 years related experience, five of which must have been in a manager or senior manager role in a law firm environment.
  • Ability to analyze data and use multiple sources of information to develop solutions and recommendations.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment, with a very strong attention to detail and a professional demeanor.
  • Ability to manage a diverse range of assignments and projects, prioritize and delegate work appropriately.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as strong presentation skills.
  • Strong service orientation and confidence to interact with Firm leadership and other senior administrative personnel.
  • Willingness to travel as needed to support the lawyers and manage staff.
  • Excellent writing, editing, proofreading and presentation skills required.
  • Proven record of creating persuasive content across a variety of mediums.

Technologies/Software

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite with a particular emphasis on Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with CRM platforms, with a preference for InterAction and eMarketing tools.

Work Environment

  • This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
